Devilman and Miki

anime100

Devilman Lady came about when Go-san wondered what the story for Devilman would have been like if the main characters were women rather than men. The manga began it's publication run in 1997 and was developed into the anime series a year later. As is the case with most adaptations, it has some notable differences. The manga is full of violence and sex, but what Go Nagai manga isn't?, whereas the anime series is toned down considerably. (It's my understanding that Devilman Lady was shown on prime-time television in Japan). Both are very well written, and beautiful to look at, a must for any anime collection. The anime actually stands up and holds it's own with the best in the horror genre.

In the original manga Jun is a teacher, and while on a outdoor excursion with a group of students, is attacked by a group of demons. In the midst of her rape, she experiences the transformation into a demon and kills her attackers. A woman named Ran Asuka appears and tells Jun it was she who awakened the demon within. According to Jun's father, the rash of demonic transformation is really the next evolutionary step for mankind, and that some humans have been altered to retain human conciousness of which Jun is one.
